Truck Show To Benefit Mason Ellingsworth

Before he was seriously injured in a tractor accident in Cochranville, Octorara Junior-Senior High School student Mason Ellingsworth was busy restoring a truck that he had saved for and purchased when he turned 16.

As part of an effort to help complete work on Mason's dream truck, the Ellingsworth family will present a truck show, featuring a display of vehicles, food and beverages and live music, on Saturday, July 23, from noon to 5 p.m. at Octorara Junior-Senior High School. All vehicle owners are invited to participate, and staging will begin at 11 a.m.

"We are not doing any awards. It's a gathering to benefit Mason. All the money raised will go toward rebuilding his truck for when he is able to drive again," said Mason's older sister, Liv Ellingsworth. "We (will) show trucks, tractors and big semi-trucks." She noted that classic cars are also welcome.

A suggested donation will be received for admission to the show for both vehicle owners and spectators. "Those who want to be in the show should be there by 11 a.m. so we can get everyone set up," Liv said, noting that the family hopes the show will attract about 150 vehicles. "We will utilize all of the parking lots of the Octorara facility."

Also on hand during the event will be the 22 BBQ food truck and the Dairy Barn, which will offer ice cream and milkshakes. The Small Troubadours will provide live music.

According to accident reports, Mason, who will be a senior at Octorara in the fall, was helping pick up hay bales on the morning of June 1. Mason and the farm owner's son were driving a tractor, which was pulling the hay wagon, when a commercial truck coming around the bend hit the tractor. Both boys were thrown from the cab, but Mason was pinned under the machine. He was airlifted to a trauma center where doctors were able to stabilize him, but the lower portion of both of his legs had to be amputated.

Since then, multiple GoFundMe accounts have been created to help the family with medical costs. There are also T-shirts and wristbands with the hashtag #masonstrong available for sale, along with other items. The truck show is the first family-sponsored benefit event. "We are so thankful for everyone for reaching out, pitching in and helping the family as much as possible," Liv said. "The support is amazing. We are so thankful for all of it. It brings some comfort to the whole situation."

Liv, who describes her younger brother as "awesome," noted that he remains hospitalized. "He is feeling great and eager to get home and go back to doing what he did before the accident. He is up moving around as much as possible," she reported.

She said that the family's goal is to complete the Dodge truck as a way to honor Mason. "(His truck) was still drivable, but it is a manual (transmission)," she noted. "Some changes will have to be made to make it drivable again. We want to get it finished for when he gets out of the hospital."

Octorara Junior-Senior High School is located at 228 Highland Road, Atglen. In the event of rain, the truck show will take place on Sunday, July 24.
