Making Music In The Park

Music in Memorial Park will return for another season when the series kicks off on Sunday, July 31, at the park, 101 Marietta Ave., Mount Joy. Hosted by the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce, the concerts will also be held on Sundays, Aug. 7 and 14. Food will be served starting at 5 p.m., and the music will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

July 31 will feature live music from the Kracker Beez, along with food for purchase from Piper Belle's BBQ. The Kracker Beez is a three-piece band that performs classic rock and pop music. Aug. 7's event will feature live music from the Celtic Martins, along with food for sale by Piper Belle's BBQ. The Celtic Martins perform Irish and American fiddle tunes. On Aug. 14, Stu Huggens and The Honkytonk Heroes, a country/Americana band, will entertain, and food will be provided by the Chamber. "That's our community event, when we give out free hot dogs, ice cream, snacks and water," said Mount Joy Chamber executive director Kerry Meyers. Food is donated by Clair and Mary Ginder, Hummer's Meats, Giant in Mount Joy, Thru-It-All Body Shop and Galen M. Dise accouting services.

Meyers said the Chamber has been hosting the music series for about seven years. "We do it as a community service," she noted. "We want to give back to the community that supports our Chamber members." The concerts also provide an opportunity for the Chamber to promote its members, with distribution of Chamber directories, pens and other materials.

The concerts always draw a large crowd, Meyers said, noting that the park makes an ideal spot for the event. "It's a beautiful park, and it has lots of shade," she stated. Handicapped-accessible parking spaces will be available along Delta Street, she noted, and a portrable restroom will be set up behind the gazebo. The series would not be possible without the support of the Chamber's Diamond Members, Meyers said, including Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. and Members 1st Federal Credit Union.

"The music is always great at the concerts," Meyers said, adding that all of the bands have participated in the series before. "You get to see a lot of people that you might not run into otherwise in the crowd. I see a lot of people getting up, walking around, talking to other attendees. There are always kids running around and playing in the back. It's just a fun community night."
