Penny Carnival Will Offer Family Fun

It has a long name and an even longer list of activities, and it promises fun for the whole family. The second annual Summer Food and Fun Extravaganza Food Truck and Penny Carnival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 6, beginning at 3 p.m. at Water's Edge United Methodist Church, 471 Abel's Road, Wrightsville.

"This is an opportunity for people to enjoy fun, inexpensive entertainment," said Lisa Miller, outreach coordinator for the church. "It allows us to share our love of Jesus with the community."

The event will feature a variety of food trucks, including The Kilted Griller, Maine Course Mobile, Taco Bus, TGB's Soup Bar, The Donut Guys, Premium Shaved Ice and ice cream from the East Prospect Lions Club. Games and prizes for children of all ages will be spotlighted. Charming Balloons will provide balloon artistry, the Craley Fire Department will be on hand with equipment, 3 Monkeys Inflatables will supply a bounce house, and Fun-E-Faces Caricatures and Facepainting by Ashley will be offered. Glorify will entertain with live music during the event. "They are a Christian contemporary band," Miller explained.

She noted that last year's inaugural event was held as an opportunity to connect with the community after isolation due to the pandemic. "We wanted to give everybody a chance to get out and be together," she stated. "We were hoping it would be a way we could reach out to the community and offer something fun and cheap to do. It was a huge success. We had an excellent turnout."

As the name implies, all carnival games will be just a penny, Miller explained. "We are going to have a penny pitch for kids, featuring plastic items, and the only game that will be more than a penny is our dime pitch for adults, featuring glassware," she noted. Kids will receive a participation prize at every game station and will be able to win tickets, which can be turned in for bigger prizes at a prize table, she said.

The congregation holds fundraisers throughout the year to be able to host the event, including selling peanut butter and coconut cream eggs at Easter and having a yard sale, Miller remarked. "We invite everybody to come out and socialize, have fun and enjoy an evening where you don't have to spend a lot of money," she said. "It's just a fun time for the community."

Water's Edge United Methodist Church holds worship services on Sundays at 8:30 a.m., followed by Sunday school for children and adults at 9:45 a.m. For more information, search for "Water's Edge United Methodist Church" on Facebook or call 717-246-2428.
