Chester County To Present Old Fiddler's Picnic

The 93rd annual Old Fiddler's Picnic, themed "A Celebration of Music - A Reunion of Friends," will take place on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hibernia Park, 1 Park Road, Coatesville. The event, presented by Chester County Parks + Preservation, will feature live musical performances, a variety of vendors offering arts and crafts, children's activities and food trucks.

A highlight of the day is always when musicians form impromptu groups throughout the Fiddler's Field, where they jam and sing together. Visitors can stroll through the grounds and listen to the music.

There is no admission fee, and parking is free. Gates will open at 8:30 a.m. Registration for stage performances will begin at 9 a.m. The music will begin on stage at 10 a.m.; the opening act will be Remington Riders.

"(Musicians can) come right up to the registration table and there are time slots, and we have the bands (choose) the time slot that works for them," explained Katie Cook, program and events coordinator. "Beyond the row of trees will be the food truck village and craft vendors as well." She noted that there will be 10 food trucks on-site, along with a sale of event T-shirts and hats.

New to this year's event will be a giant bubble performance by Bubbletopia from 1 to 4 p.m. Other children's activities will include a gaga pit, a First Down Football inflatable and an axe-throwing inflatable. "Kids love this attraction; it's all Velcro, obviously," noted Cook.

Since she is new to her position with Chester County Parks + Preservation, Cook will be visiting the Old Fiddler's Picnic for the first time this year. "From what I have been told, it has a 'hangout' atmosphere. There is always someone playing (music)," she said. "I will be seeing it for the first time, so I'm excited."

Throughout the day, visitors may hear various instruments, such as guitars, banjos and mandolins with musicians performing bluegrass, old-time and gospel music. Children and those new to stringed instruments are encouraged to learn by observing and talking to the musicians.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for seating. Tents and canopies are not permitted within Fiddler's Field. Alcohol is prohibited. Pets are welcome but must be on a leash.

Also included during the day will be tours of Hibernia Mansion, located in the park. Visitors can take a wagon shuttle or walk along park roads to visit the mansion. Guided tours will be available at 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. A suggested donation will be collected per person. The mansion was the home of many ironmasters and their families from the late 1700s through the late 1800s. The three-story mansion is fully restored and furnished with original artwork and furniture.

The rain date for the Old Fiddler's Picnic is Sunday, Aug. 14. For complete details, visit http://www.chesco.org/2415/Old-Fiddlers-Picnic.
