Lions Club Seeks New Members, Sets Mixer

People interested in joining the Gap Town Clock Lions Club are invited to attend a business mixer on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at 6:30 p.m. at Integrous Fences and Decks, 32 Route 41, Gap. The event is free, and attendees do not have to own a business to attend.

"It's for anyone interested in joining in the club or just learning about the club," said club president Steve Wenrich. "It is also a chance for people to network with local business (owners)." He noted that there is no obligation to join the club if people attend the mixer.

The event will be held outdoors, and attendees will enjoy refreshments. "It will be barbecue style (with) hamburgers and hot dogs," said Wenrich.

Wenrich will speak briefly about the club and its activities at the event, and applications will be available for those interested in pursuing membership in the club.

The Gap Town Clock Lions Club was formed in 2018. There was a Lions Club in Gap many years ago, but the club was revitalized and renamed as a way of drawing attention to the Gap Town Clock, a local attraction.

The Gap Town Clock Lions Club meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7 a.m. at a member's home. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 6. For the meeting location, email Wenrich at swenrich@fultonbank.com.

Wenrich noted that the club has about 20 members, who pay yearly dues to participate. He is hoping that the upcoming meeting will attract additional members. "If you are interested in serving in the community, we would love to have you join," said Wenrich.

In addition to social activities, the club sponsors an annual Christmas bazaar at Gap Fire Hall. "It is both a social and community-service-oriented (club)," Wenrich noted. "We have an annual picnic at a member's pool, but we also do the bazaar. We recently gave money to the Christiana Ambulance Association. We want to help the community."

The club has also started collecting plastic items as part of a recycling program offered through TREX, which allows communities to earn free benches. "We are currently working to collect plastic grocery bags so that when we get a certain amount, we can get a bench made and put that in Gap (Salisbury Township Community) Park," said Wenrich.

The Lions Club has placed a collection bin for plastic items at Florals in Time, 5293 Lincoln Highway, Gap. Plastic items that can be donated include plastic grocery bags, newspaper sleeves, empty ice bags and bread bags and the plastic that is used to wrap a case of bottled water.
