Program To Discuss Edward Hand

The Elizabethtown Historical Society, 57 S. Poplar St., will host a special program on Tuesday, Sept. 20. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 7 p.m.

Speaker Samuel Slaymaker will share about Edward Hand. Hand was born on Dec. 31, 1744, in Clyduff, King's County (now County Offaly), Ireland. Following medical training at Trinity College in Dublin, he enlisted as a surgeon's mate with the 18th Royal Irish Regiment of Foot and was sent to Fort Pitt in Pennsylvania. He held the roles of soldier, doctor, farmer, and politician, in addition to being an immigrant, a husband, and a father. His journey eventually led him to Lancaster County.
