Ensemble To Present "Delhi To Shiraz"

The Arts at Millersville University will kick off its 2022-23 season with Sandeep Das and the HUM Ensemble presenting "Delhi to Shiraz" on Friday, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in Steinman Hall at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster.

"Delhi to Shiraz" is a celebration of the shared history between two megaliths of the ancient world, India and Persia, voiced through traditional instruments including the tabla, sitar, sarangi, and santoor. It incorporates devotional poetry by Amir Khusrau, classical Indian raags, classical Persian compositions, bhajans, ghazals, and other musical elements. The program is the second initiative of Das' larger project, Transcending Borders One Note at a Time.

Founded by Das in 2010, the HUM Ensemble is dedicated to promoting global understanding and transcending borders through music. The HUM Ensemble's debut concert took place in New Delhi, and by popular demand the ensemble continued performing throughout India. The ensemble has since expanded to a global scale, performing at numerous venues and events and receiving regular invitations for residencies and masterclasses at major universities. The ensemble's debut album, "Delhi to Damascus," was released in May 2020.

Additionally, HUM is a nonprofit organization in India and has sponsored the musical education of nine visually impaired children through the HUM-Lanxess National Scholarship.
