Woman's Club Of Birdsboro To Present Annual Car Show

Although vehicles of all makes and models will be stars of the annual car show presented by the Woman's Club of Birdsboro, the event will also offer other attractions, including a cake walk, music, craft vendors, homemade food and an opportunity to win prizes.

The club will present its 24th show, rain or shine, on Sunday, Oct. 2, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Daniel Boone Area High School, 501 Chestnut St. (Route 345), Birdsboro. Admission for spectators is free.

Registration will be held from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 200 registered cars. There will also be six cash drawings - three for preregistered vehicles and three for day-of-show registrants. Vehicle owners are also eligible to win Sponsor's Choice Awards.

"We usually get around 300 cars," said Suzanne Lander, public relations chair. "We get anything from Corvettes to an antique fire truck." Among the car clubs that will be represented at the show is the Skyline Drive Corvette Club.

Lander noted that the cars will be located in the back parking lot at the school and that vehicle owners will be with their cars to answer questions.

Food will be offered for sale, including pizza by a local vendor. "Other than pizza, we prepare all of the food," Lander noted. "For breakfast, we make ham, egg and cheese sandwiches. (For lunch) there will be hamburgers and hot dogs, chili, chicken corn noodle soup and BLT wraps." Also offered will be individually wrapped homemade baked goods.

There will also be a pie auction and a cake walk. "We have a special cake made that looks like a car and we will auction that off," noted Lander.

Other highlights of the day will include door prizes, a drawing and music by a DJ. There will also be a Chinese auction. Prizes will include gift baskets, mums and restaurant and car wash gift cards.

The Woman's Club of Birdsboro, established in 1937, is a community service organization that includes women of all ages and backgrounds. "We have two really big fundraisers - this and bingo (in March). Everything that we make goes back into the community," said Lander.

Some of the proceeds from the events are used to award four scholarships to graduating seniors at Daniel Boone Area High School. Other beneficiaries have included the Boone Area Library, the Birdsboro-Union Fire Department, the Birdsboro Police Department, Southern Berks Reginal EMS, Mission Trip Birdsboro and Beyond and the Birdsboro Community Memorial Center. The club also supports the food banks at New First Baptist Church of Birdsboro and Hopewell Love.

The club meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the St. Paul's United Church of Christ Sunday school building, First and Washington streets, Birdsboro, located behind the Masonic Lodge. New members are always welcome, and membership is not limited to residents of Birdsboro.

Meetings often feature guest speakers. Past topics have included gardening and identify theft. Other meetings are used to plan fundraising events.
