Book Discussions Planned

Upcoming programs in the Exploring Growing Together discussion series have been announced. The programs will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursdays at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 E. Market St., in Room 103 on the lower level. Attendees are welcome to bring lunch to enjoy during the discussions.

Rosalie Custer will lead discussions of "When the World Came to Town" by Jim DeFede on Oct. 6 and 13 and "Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty" by Anderson Cooper and Katherine Howe on Oct. 20 and 27. "When the World Came to Town" recounts the events of 9/11 in Gander, a small town in Newfoundland, Canada. When U.S. airspace was closed, 38 jetliners bound for the United States were redirected to Gander International Airport. "Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty" tells the story of the Vanderbilt family, whose fortune was initially made through Cornelius Vanderbilt's business activities in shipping and railroads.

On Nov. 3 and 10, Shanna Boley will lead discussions of James McBride's memoir, "The Color of Water." The book tells the story of McBride and his white, Jewish mother, Ruth.

No meetings will be held in December.
