Ware Center To Present Children's Show

The Arts at Millersville University will host Chicago's Manual Cinema in "Leonardo! A Wonderful Show About a Terrible Monster" on Saturday, Oct. 22, in Steinman Hall at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event will start at noon with lobby activities for kids before the 1 p.m. show. The production is suitable for children age 3 and up.

The show is an adaptation of two books by children's author Mo Willems. The performance focuses on Leonardo the monster, who tries to be scary but fails. Then he meets Sam, the most scaredy-cat kid in the world.

Performed by three puppeteers/actors and one live musician/narrator, "Leonardo! A Wonderful Show About a Terrible Monster" uses hundreds of illustrated paper puppets, book pages, two-dimensional props, furry monster puppets, and songs to bring Willems' books to life. Manual Cinema wanted to re-create the experience of holding one of Willems' book pages, which are big, bold, colorful, and full of visual rhythm, with a playful use of scale. In all Manual Cinema productions, audience members are invited to watch the big screen like a traditional movie or to watch the artists below as they create the story in real time.

The show is 45 minutes long. There are some loud sounds, flashing lights, and furry monster puppets.

Manual Cinema is an Emmy Award-winning performance collective, design studio, and film/video production company founded in 2010. It combines handmade shadow puppetry, cinematic techniques, and innovative sound and music to create immersive stories for stage and screen.

Separate ticket prices have been set for adults and for students.
