Navy Veteran To Speak At Roundtable

The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 433 E. Main St., Hummelstown.

World War II Navy veteran Jack McSherry Jr. will share his accounts of fighting in the Battle of the Atlantic and patrolling the Mediterranean after the war. McSherry, from Conestoga, followed the path of his father and two older brothers when he joined the Navy. Trained as a quartermaster, McSherry piloted his craft through harbors and waterways littered with burned warships and supply vessels, while wary of unexploded bombs that might be below the surface of the water. He nearly perished in the icy waters of the North Atlantic on his first seafaring mission aboard a minesweeper and noted that even his adventures on shore during leave had harrowing moments.

The meeting is open to the public, and no registration is required. Additional information can be found at http://www.centralpaww2roundtable.org. The Central Pennsylvania World War II Roundtable is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for World War II veterans, authors, historians, and citizens to share their knowledge and experiences related to the war.
