Church Plans Organ Dedication Concert

First Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, will host a concert of famous organ pieces on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 3 p.m. Held in the main sanctuary, the event will feature Peter Stoltzfus Berton, a recitalist from Rhode Island.

The purpose of the program is to dedicate the church's new organ, a three-manual Allen instrument with the latest in computer sampling technology. The organ is actually five organs in one, emulating instruments from Philadelphia as well as several famous European organs. All of the available sounds of the organ will be utilized by Berton.

The program will include works by Bach, Elgar, Franck and Vierne, along with well-known hymn tunes and patriotic numbers. The music was chosen to highlight the breadth of tonal color and flexibility of the instrument.

Berton is the organist and choirmaster at Zabriskie Memorial Church of St. John the Evangelist, Newport, R.I., and the founding executive director of The Choir School of Newport County. He holds degrees from the University of Michigan School of Music and the Yale University School of Music. He is a published composer and has released several CDs.
