Workshop To Discuss Care Of Church Choirs

On Saturday, Nov. 19, the Harrisburg Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will present Wayne Wold of Frederick, Md., in a workshop titled "Preaching to the Choir: The Care and Nurture of the Church Choir." The workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to noon in the Martin Choral Rehearsal Hall of the Calvin and Janet High Center at Messiah University, 1 College Ave., Grantham. Shawn Gingrich, organ instructor at the university, will be the host of the event, which is co-sponsored by the American Choral Directors Association Student Chapter.

Wold's presentation will focus on pastoral care for church choirs, including topics such as choosing music, planning and running rehearsals, dealing with difficult people, recruiting singers, and pondering what has been learned from the pandemic, all through the lens of caring for choir members and creating community.

Many organists also serve as choir directors in churches, but this event is open to choir directors who are not the organists. Choir members or church music committee leaders and pastors are also invited to attend. The event is free of charge, and no reservations are needed.

Wold is councillor for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the American Guild of Organists, which serves approximately 275 chapters and 12,000 members throughout the United States and abroad; director of music and organist at First Lutheran Church of Ellicott City, Maryland; adjunct associate professor of music and director of the SU Church Music Institute at Shenandoah University, Winchester, Va.; and professor emeritus of music and college organist at Hood College, Frederick, Md.
