Zimmerman Center Lecture Series – “Old Times”

December 14, 2022, at 6:30pm
History of the Susquehanna River
Jerry Jones, Jones Geological Services

The Zimmerman Center is bringing back our popular lecture series connecting you with the lasting heritage of Susquehanna River and the two counties it connects. This year we want to bring back “old times” with some of our favorite lecturers, stories of the past, and the friendly atmosphere our setting creates. Spend some time with us as we share some of the many ways the river has shaped our region and the lives of the people who have been drawn to its shores.
On December 14, geologist Jeri Jones takes us back to really “old times” in our first talk, “History of the Susquehanna River”. You may know that the Susquehanna is one of the oldest rivers on Earth, but do you know how we know that? Evidence of volcanoes, continental collisions, monumental floods, and ancient creatures has long been found in the rocks in and along the Susquehanna. Jeri will use that evidence to take us on a geologic journey through eons of time, describing the events that led the Susquehanna to become such a wonder of nature. Be prepared to have your mind boggled as he answers the question, “Just how old is the river?”!

Jeri will have copies of his book “Geologic Guide to the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail” for sale to help you on your own journey of learning more about the rocks that surround this ancient river.
