Returning To Roots

Zac Bauermaster lives in Quarryville, where he was born and raised, but his career has taken him across the county to work in many other school districts. After graduating from Solanco High School in 2005, he earned his undergraduate degree in secondary education from Millersville University as well as a master's degree in educational technology from Penn State University. Bauermaster has also earned a doctorate in educational leadership and his superintendent letter of eligibility from Drexel University.

Bauermaster worked in the Solanco School District for eight years, teaching ninth grade at Solanco High School for three years and serving as the principal and learning administrator for five years at Swift Middle School. Bauermaster then became the assistant principal at Manheim Central High School, followed by his time as the head principal of Kissel Hill Elementary in Warwick, where he currently works and will remain until the end of December. Over winter break, Bauermaster will officially transition to Providence Elementary to fill the role of principal.

Part of Bauermaster's philosophy and approach to life is perpetual motion; he loves to learn and constantly broadens his perspective with new experiences and undertakings. "I've learned a lot through my different experiences because I don't get too comfortable," Bauermaster said. "The past five and a half years outside of Solanco, I've been able to find my leadership voice and meet a lot of wonderful people."

Bauermaster also noted that Solanco taught him much as a both student and teacher, and he looks forward to returning. Aside from the added bonus of the much shorter commute, Bauermaster is excited to be deeply rooted in his community once more. Although he is grateful for his time in other parts of the county, Bauermaster can't wait to teach in the district where his own children attend school, where he coaches youth sports teams and where he attends church.

In July, Bauermaster published his first book, titled "Leading With a Humble Heart." He first began working on the book last year, when Jimmy Casas, CEO of ConnectEd, heard about the idea and contacted Bauermaster to learn more. Bauermaster shared his vision with Casas, and Casas decided to move it forward. "Leading With a Humble Heart" is a 40-day devotional, with each section relaying a lesson Bauermaster has learned from people encountered throughout his career, which he ties in with Scripture. "It all goes back to the Bible," Bauermaster said. "You can find some of the greatest leadership lessons in Scripture, both successes and failures."

Bauermaster is donating all proceeds from his book sales in November to his former student Colin Buffington and his family, who are serving as missionaries in Western Honduras. "The best part of education is seeing kids you taught using their gifts to serve the world and communities after school," Bauermaster said. "It can be challenging raising mission funds, so I wanted to fnd a way to give back to (Buffington) and his family."
