Volunteers Sought For Tree Project

The Marietta Shade Tree Committee is seeking volunteers to help with its new initiative, My Forest Volunteer Days, on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon. Helpers will meet on the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail at the south end of Chestnut Street.

Volunteers will cut English ivy and other vines away from the base of some trees along the trail, as the vines are damaging the canopy. Volunteers are asked to bring clippers and loppers and to wear clothing appropriate for the weather. They should be aware that they may encounter poison ivy. Natural lands planning and management expert Brandon Tennis of Marietta will supervise.

Those who plan to volunteer may contact Lillian Hill at 717-309-3309, although advance sign-up is not required; walk-ups are welcome. Volunteers will also be needed on Saturdays, Feb. 25, March 25, and April 29.

The Marietta Shade Tree Committee will also offer free trees in the spring. More details are forthcoming.
