Harlem Quartet Plans Concert

The Arts at Millersville University will present the Harlem Quartet in concert on Friday, Jan. 20, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be held in Biemesderfer Hall of the Winter Visual & Performing Arts Center, 60 W. Cottage Ave., on the campus of Millersville University (MU).

The New York-based Harlem Quartet consists of violinists Ilmar Lopez-Gavilán and Melissa White, violist Jaime Amado, and cellist Felix Umansky. As artists in the annual McIlwaine Concert and masterclass, the quartet will work with MU Tell School of Music students who will perform on select works with the quartet.

In September 2021, MU presented the documentary "Los Hermanos," which tells the story of Harlem Quartet founder Ilmar and his brother Aldo Lopez-Gavilán. The Cuban-born music virtuosos also visited live via Zoom for a discussion of their story.

The upcoming Harlem Quartet performance is made possible through the Melva S. McIlwaine Concert and Masterclass Endowment Fund. Since 2009, the endowment has provided an opportunity for the MU campus and greater community to enjoy nationally and internationally recognized artists in vocal and instrumental music, along with an opportunity for MU music students to work with and appear on stage with the visiting professional musicians.
