Church To Host Classes

Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, will host a series of classes for adults, titled "Processing Our Faith in the 21st Century: A Gentle Introduction of Process Theology." The classes will be held on Sundays, Feb. 5 to 26, from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. in Room 102 at the church.

Each class will consist of two 10-minute presentations, discussion and a question-and-answer session. The topics will be "Overview of Process Theology" on Feb. 5, "Where Process Theology Supports or Challenges Traditional Ways of Believing" on Feb. 12, "How Process Theology Contributes to Our Thinking/Acting Toward Creation and Church Life" on Feb. 19 and "Exploring Questions and Implications of Process Theology" on Feb. 26. The classes are geared toward those for whom traditional ways of understanding faith in God no longer seem to align with an increasingly scientific 21st century.

The instructors will be Bible scholars Christina Bucher and John David Bowman. Bucher recently retired from her job as a religion professor at Elizabethtown College. She has held leadership roles in the Society for Biblical Literature and the American Academy of Religion and is a published author. Bowman is a retired pastor and educator, has been a participant in the Society for Biblical Literature and a subscriber to the Jesus Seminar, and pastored churches in three denominations in five states and Scotland. He has taught at Elizabethtown College, Bethany Theological Seminary and Eastern Mennonite University. He is also a published author.

Participants are encouraged to obtain the text "Reclaiming the Transcendent: Faith in Process" by Thomas Gates, which may be ordered from https://pendlehill.org/product-category/view-all/.
