Strasburg Fire Company Posts Spring Sale

Strasburg Fire Company, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg, will host its annual spring donation and consignment sale on Friday, Feb. 24, from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 25, at 8 p.m. The fundraising event will have dinner available to purchase as well as food from several vendors.

When attendees first arrive, they will enter a designated tent to receive a bidder number. Throughout the sale, buyers can bid on any item being offered, with bids tracked using the bidder number. Once buyers are finished bidding on items, they can return to the tent and pay for their purchases.

A wide selection of goods will be sold, including household goods, crafts, quilts, new and used tools, farm equipment, lawn furniture, sporting goods, and sheds. "We've got everything," said Scott Smith, a firefighter at Strasburg Fire Company. "If you name it, we probably have it."

This event will mark the 48th year that the fire company has hosted its spring consignment sale, and the sale serves as the fire company's largest fundraiser. The firefighters also coordinate smaller fundraisers in addition to the spring sale, such as breakfasts and chicken barbecues. The money raised from these fundraisers goes into the fire company's primary fund, which is used to pay its electricity bill, internet and cable expenses, equipment and repair costs, personnel equipment and general maintenance costs for the fire hall. Occasionally, Strasburg Fire Company will have a fundraiser that is designated to fund a specific piece of equipment, such as its new firetruck that is scheduled to arrive this summer.

This is Smith's eighth year as a volunteer firefighter with Strasburg Fire Company. During the day, Smith works in the flooring industry, but firefighting is something that he has always wanted to do. Smith comes from a long line of those who have served as either firefighters or members of the military. "There are plenty of instances where you can find it rewarding, but you always have that soft spot for situations. You're there to do a job, but your heart goes out to the people that just lost everything," Smith said. "It's important to have people to respond to these things. It's not in everyone to do so."
