"Leaders and Liberators" event planned

A "Leaders and Liberators" event will be held in Columbia on Saturday, March 11, from 3 to 6 p.m. The event will honor the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman in observance of the 110th anniversary of her death.

Three influential leaders of the Underground Railroad will be portrayed at 3 p.m. in a performance at the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, 222 S. Fifth St., Columbia. The performance tells the story of an imagined meeting on July 4, 1872, of Harriet Tubman, Stephen Smith and William Whipper, conductors and agents who led hundreds to freedom through the network of the Underground Railroad from the 1830s through the 1850s. Whipper and Smith were contemporaries of Tubman who built a successful lumber company in Columbia.

The event will feature Raquel Richardson portraying Tubman, Lenwood Sloane as Whipper and Nelson Polite Jr. as Smith; all three performers are experienced actors. The historically informed script was written by Lancaster historian Randolph Harris.

"Leaders and Liberators" will continue with a journey to Saint Paul Episcopal Church, 340 Locust St., Columbia. Guests will enjoy a reception of West African cuisine at 4:30 p.m. followed by a service of evening prayer in the sanctuary at 5:30 p.m.

"Leaders and Liberators" is free and open to the community. The event is sponsored by the Bishop Nathan Baxter Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians in partnership with the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania, Saint James Episcopal in Lancaster and Saint Paul Episcopal and Mount Zion AME in Columbia.
