Talk to focus on Union Army officer

The Harrisburg Civil War Round Table will meet on Friday, April 14, at the Central Penn College Conference Center, 600 Valley Road, Summerdale. Doors will open at 6 p.m., and a buffet dinner of flank steak, tilapia, roasted potatoes, green beans, Caesar salads, soup, and cookies will be served at 6:45 p.m. Anyone who wishes to attend the lecture only should arrive by 7:30 p.m. The lecture will also be broadcast via Zoom.

Licensed Gettysburg Battlefield guide James A. Hessler will discuss "July 1, 1863: What Did Reynolds Know and When Did He Know It?" His talk will focus on what Maj. Gen. John F. Reynolds, commander of the Army of the Potomac's I Corps, was trying to accomplish when a sniper took his life on the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Reynolds was a native of Lancaster.

Hessler is the author of "Sickles at Gettysburg" and co-author of "Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg" and "Gettysburg's Peach Orchard: Longstreet, Sickles, and the Bloody Fight for the 'Commanding Ground' Along the Emmitsburg Road." He has been a guest on NPR, the Travel Channel, PCN-TV, Breitbart News, and Civil War Radio.

The lecture is free. There is a fee for the dinner, payable at the door; however, anyone wishing to attend the dinner should make reservations by Sunday, April 9, by contacting Brian Foster at hcwrt.membership@gmail.com or 717-962-6122.
