Program to focus on historical postcards

The Solanco Historical Society will present "Early Susquehanna River Views" on Saturday, April 15, at 1:30 p.m. at the society's Archives Building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway (Route 222), Quarryville. The society's building is located 6 miles south of Quarryville, across from the Robert Fulton Birthplace.

Early postcard views along the Susquehanna River from Columbia to York Haven will be displayed. Postcards will cover Columbia and the Pennsylvania Railroad, Chickies Rock and the park that operated there. Attendees will be able to see photos of the iron furnaces between Columbia and Marietta, as well as the Accomac and Wildcat Falls hotels in York County and the ferry boats that went back and forth on the river at this summer vacation spot. The talk will end with a discussion of Bainbridge and the York Haven hydroelectric plant.

Speaker Mark W. Arbogast is a retired PPL land manager who worked at the Holtwood and Brunner Island power plant projects. He is a local historian and postcard collector.
