Food truck fest will satisfy Warwick students' hunger for music

Of course, you've got a lot going on. Sure, you're busy. But clear a space on your calendars and mark it down, because you're not going to want to miss this.

It's a day of fun and food and music and fellowship. All for one great cause.

It's the third edition of the Warwick Band Food Truck Fest, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, at Lititz Springs Park, 18 N. Broad St., Lititz. All proceeds from the event will support the Warwick Middle and High School band programs, which benefit more than 150 local students through the medium of music.

"It's really heart-warming to see all the people come out," said Matt Tenaglia, who's been the director of the Warwick High School and Middle School band programs for six years. "You've got the smell of the foods in the air. There's warm temperatures. It's a great day. I absolutely love this event. It's a good way to make money, but it's almost an afterthought. The goal is to bring people out."

"This also gives kids another outlet to perform," continued Tenaglia. "I try to think outside the box as much as I can. We looked at the park and said, 'How can we use that space to bring people together?' The kids love this event, because after they perform, they can spend time with their friends."

Fourteen food trucks offering all sorts of fare will be on hand that day. Their presence will be supported instrumentally by the Warwick High School and Middle School jazz bands and the program's String Synergy group.

A crowd of up to 1,000 people is expected for the Warwick Band Food Truck Fest, and the monies raised will supplement what the school district has budgeted for the band program - dollars that will ultimately lead to greater opportunities for the seventh- to 12th-grade students involved with the extracurricular activity.

"Band is a huge reach from school to community," said Tenaglia. "We perform at parades, football games and competitions. Music helps teach kids how to count and read at the same time. But we also try to give kids an opportunity to lead. With the music program here, we try to give kids a total, overall education experience. With all the skills they learn, they're going to be better people."

In addition to the two jazz bands, the Warwick High School and Middle School band programs also support a pair of concert bands and the Warrior Marching Band.

"They're great kids," said Tenaglia. "They've come a long way and grown so much. That's what makes my job so special. I get to see them when they're 12, all the way up until they're 18. Every kid in this program is top-notch. They carry themselves with respect, and they work hard."
