Program to explore rock carvings

The Millersville Area Historical Society (MAHS) invites the public to a slideshow on "The Mysterious Petroglyphs of Safe Harbor" when it meets at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, in Millersville's Municipal Center, 100 Municipal Drive. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and lock at 9:15 a.m.

The presenter will be Adam Zurn, an educator and amateur historian who runs Uncharted Lancaster, a website that highlights pieces of local and regional history.

Zurn will recount his expeditions down the lower Susquehanna River to explore the Native American petroglyphs hidden on the ancient river at Safe Harbor. The carvings are some of the oldest man-made artifacts in Lancaster County. Zurn will discuss their importance and possible meanings as well as share some local legends surrounding the rock art.

A 22-year technology education teacher at Lampeter-Strasburg School District, Zurn migrated from Susquehanna County in northeastern Pennsylvania to Lancaster County in 1997. After receiving three degrees at Millersville University and living in Millersville for more than a decade, he moved to his current residence in Conestoga. He enjoys exploring off the trail, searching for forgotten locations and documenting those experiences online, as well as offering guided tours of the Conestoga area.

Admission is free, but donations are appreciated. For more details, contact Phil Gerber at 717-872-8837 before noon or at pge8507@aol.com.
