Northwest EMS awards scholarships

Two local students have been awarded the Robert C. Stirling Scholarship, given to residents of the Manheim Central community who are pursuing a degree in the medical field. This year's winners are Noelle J. Rohrer and Logan S. McGallicher.

Noelle, a homeschool student, is the daughter of Travis and Leigh Ann Rohrer of Lititz. She plans to attend Liberty University to earn a Bachelor of Nursing. "Ever since I was little, I have always wanted to be a nurse," Noelle said. "My grandma, cousin and youth leader, all influential people in my life, were or are nurses, so growing up, I've heard a lot of stories, advice and encouragement. This has all played a big part in my decision to pursue nursing."

Noelle has been involved in the Manheim Central girls' soccer program throughout middle and high school. At her church, she serves on the leadership team and in the praise band, and she is a member of the youth group.

"Noelle demonstrated self-motivation and discipline by her academic GPA, having already earned 36 college credits, and her involvement in youth mission trips, both in the States and abroad," said Lori Shenk, community outreach manager for Northwest EMS, which sponsors the scholarship. "Her goal is to be a psychiatric nurse, and she demonstrated in her application and in the various service and mission projects she's been involved in that she is likely going to excel in her continued academic career, as well as her future career endeavors in the medical field."

Logan, a senior at Manheim Central High School, is the son of Eric and Mary McGallicher of Manheim. After graduation, he plans to attend Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences in the radiography program. "I've always enjoyed helping people, and everyone tells me I am very compassionate so I thought something in the medical field would be a good fit for me," Logan shared. "I was able to volunteer in the medical imaging department at Penn Medicine Kissel Hill this past fall semester. I did that as an internship for school credit and really liked the combination of working with people and the technology of the machines. I would like to eventually specialize as an MRI tech." At Manheim Central, Logan played baseball for all four years of high school and played on the golf team his senior year.

"Logan took advantage of a volunteer internship opportunity in radiology and applied himself to learn as much as he could, resulting in him choosing to focus his education and career goals to his specific field of interest," Shenk remarked. "Those providing letters of recommendation shared that Logan is focused, quick to volunteer and eager to learn as much as he can so that he can best help the patient under his care."

The Robert C. Stirling Scholarship is named in memory and honor of Robert "Bob" C. Stirling, a lifetime member of the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association and an active volunteer in the community.
