Barons top York Catholic; fall in district semis

Pick your favorite cliche, maybe it is 'Dejà vu all over again' or maybe you prefer the 90's cult classic movie 'Groundhog Day', either way if you are a fan of the Manheim Central boys' volleyball team and it feels like you have traveled this postseason road before, it is because you have.

For the second consecutive year the Barons hit a roadblock in the semifinal round of the District 3-2A tournament. This time it was a 3-2 loss to Exeter Township on May 30th that derailed Central's district title hopes. Pushing the loss further down heartbreak road would be that Manheim was up 2-0 after opening the match with wins of 25-23 and 25-19. That all took place before the Eagles found their groove, claiming games three and four by nearly identical scores of 25-20 and 25-22. Exeter continued their roll, taking the decisive fifth game by a 15-12 final, handing Manheim their first loss of the season.

Dylan Musser, Logan Groff, and Colin Roher fronted Central's efforts. Musser with 56 assists and three blocks, Groff with 23 kills and Rohrer with 31 digs and one ace. Landon Mattiace matched Musser's three blocks.

Manheim Central earned that semifinal slot with a win on the 25th, slipping by York Catholic in the quarterfinals. Central was able to collect their 11th 3-0 sweep of the season but all three games were closely contested. The Barons squeaked out wins of 25-22 and 25-23 to put York Catholic on the brink before finishing the sweep with a 25-17 game three win.

Musser was again at the forefront of things with 42 assists and nine digs. Jacob Moyer finished with 15 kills, seven digs and one ace while Peter Burkhart added seven kills and seven digs. Toby Frey chipped in with six kills and four blocks while Reagan Miller collected a team high 14 digs. Roher added eight digs in the win.

TRACK

Two members of the track and field team, Maddie Knier and Landon McGallicher, made the return trip to Shippensburg University and Seth Grove Stadium for the 2023 edition of the PIAA Championship Meet on May 26th and 27th.

Knier kept busy, taking part in four different events with the senior's top finish coming in the long jump. There, her top leap of 17' 7.75" was good enough to earn a spot on the medal stand, slotting her 6th in the 27-member field. Knier saved her best javelin work for last, popping an 8th place throw of 129' 1" on her sixth and final throw. Knier's work in the triple jump left her just off the medal stand in 9th place but the 36' 10.5" was the top showing from the Lancaster-Lebanon League. Knier's final event was the high jump where she faltered a bit, missing all three attempts at 5' 2". That left Knier well off the pace and in 15th place with a top height of 5'.

McGallicher took part in just one event in Shippensburg, the 110 high hurdles in the 3A competition. The senior's PIAA run ended in the second heat of the preliminary round where his 15.21 was 0.25 seconds outside the qualifying time needed to make the finals.
