Birdsboro Farmers Market offers fresh produce, baked goods and more

The Birdsboro Farmers Market is now open for its third season, with new vendors and activities planned throughout the summer. The outdoor market, presented by the Birdsboro Parks and Recreation Department, is typically open every other Saturday at Main Bird Park, located at 226 N. Water St., Birdsboro. The next scheduled event will be on July 15 and the final markets of the year will be on Oct. 7 and 14.

The market takes place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the exception of July 29, when the market will be open from 4 to 8 p.m., followed by a free movie screening in the park. A community yard sale will be held at the park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day.

"We wanted to test out an evening market," said board president Christen Thompson. "We're going to play the movie 'Free Guy' afterwards in the park. It's a good family movie (starring) Ryan Reynolds. We have a big inflatable screen. We've done movies over at Texas ballfield before, but we are going to do that (in the park) this time. This is a newer movie, so we hope it brings people out."

For the community yard sale, a fee will be charged per space in the park. Those who are having yard sales at their homes may be included in a map for a fee. To register or for more details, search for "Birdsboro Parks and Recreation" on Facebook and choose "Events."

"Christmas in July" will be the theme of the market on July 15. "We will have Santa Claus come; he will be in the gazebo. The vendors will be doing Christmas sales," Thompson said, noting one vendor will sell ornaments.

Baby Goat Yoga will be featured at the Aug. 12 market from 10 to 11 a.m. Tickets will be required.

Those who shop at the market will find a variety of plants, flowers, fresh fruits and vegetables, canned and pickled goods, baked items, honey, tea, pet products, jewelry, wine and more. Community groups, such as Blazer Youth Sports (BYS), will be on hand as well as local food trucks. There are also craft activities offered for children.

"We have three or four local farms (represented)," noted Thompson. "Andley Farm just signed up. They sell goat milk soap. We also have a new microgreens (vendor)."

In addition to sponsoring the farmers market, Thompson announced that the department is holding an anti-vandalism anti-graffiti contest. Middle-schoolers are invited to create an anti-vandalism poster that should include the effect vandalism and graffiti has on the community. The winner will receive a cash prize. Submissions should be emailed to christen.g.thompson@gmail.com by July 15.

"We are trying to discourage vandalism in the parks," Thompson said. "They can submit posters and then we will pick a winner, and we will have their posters printed up and posted at the parks."

Finally, Thompson announced that the board has purchased new fitness equipment. Plans call for the items to be installed by the public works department in Rustic Park.
