GEARS programs to explore science, sports and more

GEARS will offer several recreational programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person cost, with a discounted rate for GEARS members. To register or for more information, visit http://www.getintogears.org or call GEARS at 717-367-0355.

Snapology will offer two programs for children ages 3 to 5 on Monday to Wednesday, July 24 to 26, at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown.

A Jr. Scientists program, "All About Animals," will take place from 9 to 9:45 a.m. Children will analyze the differences between vertebrates and invertebrates, construct their way through the butterfly and frog life cycles, build reptiles and examine the differences and similarities between insects and arachnids using Kid K'Nex pieces.

Children may then attend a Jr. Engineers program from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Using DUPLO blocks, participants will build and manipulate simple models, allowing them to experience pulleys, levers, gears, wheels and axles while exploring energy, buoyancy and balance. The class will also include free-building time to promote creativity.

A Learn to Bowl and Bowl Better Mini-Camp will be available for children ages 8 to 12 on Monday to Thursday, July 24 to 27, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at Clearview Lanes, 1990 W. Main St., Mount Joy. Lessons will include arm swing, a four-step approach, targeting and spare making. Clearview Lanes staff will instruct.

GEARS will offer a trip to the Bronx Zoo in New York City on Saturday, Aug. 5. Participants will depart at 7:30 a.m. from the parking lot of Elizabethtown Area High School, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The deluxe ticket includes the zoo shuttle, the monorail, the World of Reptiles, Jungle World and more. The Bronx Zoo spans more than 256 acres and has more than 22 exhibits and many attractions and experiences.
