"Double Dare" host will entertain in Elizabethtown

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, if you turned on Nickelodeon, chances are you could see contestants on the game show "Double Dare" competing to run an obstacle course, completing silly challenges like "Pies in the Pants" or trying to avoid being covered in green slime. And hosting the mayhem while encouraging the contestants was Marc Summers. Now you can meet the television personality, comedian and talk show host in person when he comes to Elizabethtown.

Double Dare You to Come to E-Town with Marc Summers will be held on Saturday, July 29. The event will run from 4 to 8 p.m., with Summers appearing at The Tatted Toy Guys, 4 S. Market St., from 5 to 7 p.m.

Summers' appearance coincides with a performance the following weekend at Mount Gretna Theatre, explained Tony Gibble, who is organizing the Elizabethtown event with Clint Gibble. "The Mount Gretna Theatre came to us about slime for the show," said Tony, who owns The Tatted Toy Guys, The Candy Unicornium and Figments in Sprinkles with Clint. "Having wanted to do a 'Double Dare'-inspired event for some time, it seemed a perfect opportunity to make that come to life with the extra-special option of adding the show's host to it. To our humble delight, Marc was enthusiastic about doing it, and so the event was born." Summers will perform "The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers" at Mount Gretna Theatre from Thursday, Aug. 3, through Sunday, Aug. 6.

At the Elizabethtown event, Summers will talk about the show and answer questions. There will also be various games and activities hosted by LIV-ETown and downtown Elizabethtown businesses, all in conjunction with the theme.

Typically, LIV-ETown organizes events on second Fridays and some Sundays, but Tony and Clint said they have wanted to expand to Saturdays and when the timing worked out to host Summers, they jumped at the chance. "How many chances do you get to be in the same space and possibly get to interact with an icon like Marc and in addition get to partake in something so nostalgic as 'Double Dare'?" said Clint. "In addition to the activities being planned by LIV-ETown and The Tatted Toy Guys, like games and challenges, there will be other activities, offerings and specials by many downtown E-Town businesses to participate in and special stickers available for 'My Town E-Town Sticker Book' holders to collect."

He encourages everyone to come out for the free event, noting, "It'll truly be a time to relive childhood for some and a chance to share the past with kids that didn't get to grow up with something as fun as 'Double Dare' on TV."
