Conservancy posts plant sale, kids' program

Manada Conservancy will host a summer native plant sale on Thursday, Aug. 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the organization's native plant nursery, located within the East Hanover Township Nature Park at 328 N. Crawford Road, Grantville. The sale will feature keystone plants and late-blooming perennials. It will be the conservancy's last sale for 2023.

The event is a fundraiser to support the land preservation and environmental education efforts of the Manada Conservancy, a nonprofit land trust serving Dauphin County. To learn more, visit http://www.manada.org, call 717-566-4122 or email office@manada.org.

Additionally, Manada Conservancy will host a stream ecology lesson and experience for children age 8 and up at Camp Catherine, 1275 Swatara Road, Hershey, on Saturday, Aug. 26. Participants may attend from 9 to 10:15 a.m. or from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m.

Children will have the opportunity to wet-wade in the creek, exploring the nooks and crannies of the stream's habitat. Samples of aquatic life will be collected and retained for closer examination. An elementary introduction to the stream's ecology and the importance of aquatic life and clean water will be presented. Children should wear clothing and shoes that can get wet, and they may choose to bring a flotation device.

This free program will be led by Tony Shaw, a Master Watershed Steward for Dauphin County. Shaw is a retired aquatic biologist who has taught stream ecology and water-focused kids' programs for many years.

Space is limited. To make reservations by Saturday, Aug. 12, email office@manada.org. Emails should include the name of the parent or guardian, the number and ages of the children being registered, and the preferred session. A liability release form will be sent when registration is confirmed.
