City wins recognition, expands bike share progam

The City of Lancaster has achieved a milestone in promoting bicycling as a safe, affordable and sustainable mode of transportation. The city has recently been awarded a Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community status from the League of American Bicyclists, recognizing its commitment to creating a safe and accessible cycling environment for riders of all levels. In addition, the city recently expanded its bike share program, Bike It Lancaster.

The League of American Bicyclists awarded Bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community status to the city of Lancaster in recognition of the strides taken to enhance bicycle infrastructure, education and overall support for cycling enthusiasts. Bicycle Friendly Community awards reflect local leaders' ongoing work to build better places to bike and evaluate those efforts as part of a national movement. Each level of the Bicycle Friendly Community award provides a clear path for cities and towns to continuously improve.

One of the significant endeavors contributing to this certification is the expansion of the Bike It Lancaster bike share program. With five more bike stations and 25 additional bikes strategically placed throughout the city, locals and visitors can now enjoy greater access to a fleet of 50 brand new bicycles, making it easier than ever to explore Lancaster city on two wheels.

With the implementation of new bike lanes, improved signage and the expanded bike share program, the city of Lancaster continues to prioritize the safety of all cyclists. These efforts are aligned with the city's strategic priority of creating a safe and accessible city for all, as well as the Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries in the transportation system.
