Trust to present history program

As part of its series of Third Saturday Programs, held May through September, the Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County will present a talk about Pennsylvania German gravestones on Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. The program will held at the White Horse Inn, 31 Old Philadelphia Pike, Douglassville.

Michael Emery, Cornwall Iron Furnace site administrator, will present the PowerPoint program. Emery will discuss tombstones, mainly located in Lancaster, Berks and Lebanon counties, from historical and architectural viewpoints. He will discuss how the material with which gravestones were fashioned changed over time and the art on the early gravestones, which utilized Pennsylvania German folk art, such as flowers and stars, rather than Christian designs.

Emery has worked for 25 years for the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission and has studied and lectured about Pennsylvania German gravestones for more than 25 years. He graduated from Penn State University with a Bachelor of Arts in history.

The Whtie Horse Inn is located in Morlatton Village. A suggested donation will be received per person. All proceeds will benefit the trust. For more information, visit http://www.historicpreservationtrust.org.
