Lions Club will host bingo at the Elizabethtown Fair

For more than 35 years, the Elizabethtown Lions Club hosted bingo at the Elizabethtown Fair. Now the event is back for the second year after the group took a break for about 10 years.

Bingo will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. every evening during the fair, which will run from Monday, Aug. 21, through Saturday, Aug. 26. Bingo will also be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23. It will be held in the large building closest to East High Street Elementary School.

"It's a lot of fun and it's inexpensive entertainment," said John Lerch, treasurer of the Lions Club, inviting everyone to come to bingo. "Cash prizes are offered at the end of each round."

The Lions Club holds bingo to raise money for the Elizabethtown community, particularly people with vision and hearing loss. "We also hold bingo to get to know the members of our community better and raise awareness of who we are and what we do," said bingo chair Dave Longenecker.

The Elizabethtown Lions Club takes an active role in the community, supporting a wide variety of projects and initiatives. The group provides scholarships to high school seniors; sponsors the annual football awards and banquet for the Lancaster-Lebanon League; and donates to the Elizabethtown Food Bank, the Rheems and Elizabethtown fire departments and ECHOS, among other organizations. It also supports the Elizabethtown Area School District facility dog program, and the group will soon launch a Military Honor Banner program in Elizabethtown. Beyond the local community, the Elizabethtown Lions Club supports the Lions Beacon Lodge in Mount Union, the Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Eye Bank, VisionCorps and the Susquehanna Association for the Blind and Vision Impaired, among other organizations.

"The E-town Lions Club is a vibrant supporter of community organizations through distribution of monies from our fundraisers and time members contribute to good causes," said Chuck Brewer, club president. "We are always looking for new needs within our community and new members who will help us serve the Elizabethtown area."

The Lions Club will hold a car show and chicken barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 16, and tickets for the event will be available during bingo.

Lions Club secretary Greg Hitz encouraged people to consider learning more about the Lions. "We invite people to become Lions," he stated. "Join us for our regular meeting as our guest on the second or fourth Tuesday of the month at 6:15 p.m. at the Elizabethtown Fire Department hall."
