Meeting to highlight defense of Culp's Hill at Gettysburg

The Harrisburg Civil War Round Table will meet on Friday, Sept. 15, at the Central Penn College Conference Center, 600 Valley Road, Summerdale. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner of cider brined pork loin, lemon cod fillet, jasmine rice pilaf, broccoli, mixed field greens, house-made soup du jour, assorted cookies, rolls and butter, iced tea and lemonade will be served at 6:15 p.m. Anyone who wishes to attend the lecture only should arrive by 7 p.m. The lecture will also be broadcast via Zoom.

Dan Welch will discuss the defense of Culp's Hill on July 2, 1863, by George Sears Greene's brigade. This lone Union brigade held the hill in a climactic action against overwhelming odds and repeated attacks by Confederate forces. Welch previously shared this program at this summer's Sacred Trust lectures in Gettysburg.

Welch served as the education programs coordinator for the Gettysburg Foundation and continues to serve as a seasonal park ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park. He is the editor of Gettysburg Magazine and has been a contributing member at Emerging Civil War for over seven years. He is the co-author of two works in the Emerging Civil War Series: "The Last Road North: A Guide to the Gettysburg Campaign, 1863" and "Never Such a Campaign: The Battle of Second Manassas, August 28-30, 1862." Welch has also co-edited several volumes in the Emerging Civil War's 10th Anniversary Series.

The lecture is free. There is a fee for the dinner, payable at the door; however, anyone wishing to attend the dinner should make reservations by Monday, Sept. 11, by contacting Brian Foster at hcwrt.membership@gmail.com or 717-962-6122.
