Woman's club to present annual car show

The Woman's Club of Birdsboro will present its 25th annual car show rain or shine on Sunday, Oct. 1, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Daniel Boone Area High School, 501 Chestnut St. (Route 345), Birdsboro. All makes and models of vehicles are welcome, and admission for spectators is free.

Registration will be held from 8 to 10:30 a.m.; all vehicles must be in the show lot by 11 a.m. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 200 registered cars. There will also be six cash drawings - three for preregistered vehicles and three for day-of-show registrants. Winners will be chosen through a random drawing. Vehicle owners are also eligible to win Sponsor's Choice Awards. New this year is a Best of Show award that will be given to the car club that brings the most vehicles to display.

"If we have a day (of good weather), we will easily get 300 cars," said Suzanne Lander, club president. "The Skyline Drive Corvette Club will bring quite a few Corvettes, and there will be an antique fire truck." As club president, Lander is responsible for choosing one car, the likeness of which will be featured on next year's dash plaque.

The vehicles will be located in the back parking lot at the school, and vehicle owners will be with their cars to answer questions. A DJ will provide music throughout the day.

Food will be offered for sale, including pizza by a local vendor. "We will have chicken noodle soup and chili and baked goods," Lander said, noting all items are homemade. "There will also be a cake walk."

A Chinese auction will take place. Prizes will include gift baskets, mums and restaurant gift cards.

The Woman's Club of Birdsboro, established in 1937, is a community service organization that includes women of all ages and backgrounds. "We have two really big fundraisers - this and bingo (in March). Everything that we make goes back into the community," said Lander, adding that the next bingo will be on Sunday, March 3, 2024.

Proceeds from the fundraisers benefit local organizations, as well as fund scholarships to graduating seniors at Daniel Boone Area High School. Beneficiaries of the fundraisers include the Boone Area Library, Birdsboro-Union Fire Department, Birdsboro Police Department, Mission Trip Birdsboro and Beyond, Birdsboro Community Memorial Center and area food banks, including Hopewell Love.

The club meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month from September through May at 7 p.m. at the St. Paul's United Church of Christ Sunday school building, First and Washington streets, Birdsboro. New members are always welcome, and membership is not limited to residents of Birdsboro.

Lander noted that despite inclement weather, last year's car show was a success. "Last year there was a hurricane, but our dedicated (supporters) still came out - most without their cars," she said. "They put up a canopy and sat in chairs in the pouring rain and ate food and (took part in the auction). It was amazing that anyone came at all. ... We still (raised funds) because our fans came out to support us."
