Cabaret to feature classical and Broadway tunes

The Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts will hold a "Bach, Beethoven, and Broadway Cabaret" on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 2 p.m. at Lancaster First Assembly, 1025 Columbia Ave., Lancaster.

Attendees will hear classical selections, including works by Beethoven, Mozart and Chopin, as well as pieces from Broadway shows, such as "Les Miserables," "Kiss Me, Kate" and "Fiddler on the Roof." Local professionals from Sight & Sound Theatres, Red Accordion Studios, Piercing Word, and Reji Woods Productions have been involved in the process, and many will perform. The nearly 80-minute program will also feature students from the academy.

The cabaret is a capstone project of academy senior Candace Mbugua. Having been a student of the academy for 12 years, Mbugua wanted to give back by raising funds for the school. Mbugua's time and training at the academy have inspired her to pursue higher education with the goal of having a career in the performing arts.

The Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts is in its 28th year of training students in the performing arts. Classes include choirs, orchestra, and ensembles for strings, percussion, and guitar, in addition to fine arts and theater classes. The mission of the organization is to pursue musical excellence for the glory of God and to be a blessing to the community.

Proceeds from the cabaret will go toward new sound equipment and venue rental associated with the academy's spring musical productions. The fundraising goal is $10,000.

No tickets are required, and admission is by donation. Concessions will be available for purchase.
