WordUP Ministries to present Trunk or Treat

WordUP Community Ministries will again present a Trunk or Treat event, rain or shine, on Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the Gap Fire Company, 802 Pequea Ave., Gap. Dinner will be available for purchase beginning at 5 p.m., and then children will be able to visit decorated cars to gather Halloween candy from 6 to 8 p.m.

During Trunk or Treat, which aims to offer a safe alternative to trick-or-treating door to door, children can travel from vehicle to vehicle collecting candy and treats. Children are encouraged to dress in costume, and attendees should bring their own bags for collecting candy. Dogs on leashes will also be welcome; some cars may even provide pet treats.

The D&Bz food truck will be on-site starting at 5 p.m. Food items that will be offered include cheeseburgers, hot dogs, french fries, walking tacos and beverages. "Tables will be set up so people can come and eat with their families," said WordUP pastor Buck Mowday. "We encourage them to get supper." Only cash will be accepted for food purchases.

Businesses and organizations are also invited to decorate trunks and promote their products and services or set up a table inside the fire hall. "People can decorate however they want. They can express their creativity," said Mowday.

There is no fee for vehicle owners, but they will be required to supply the candy. People interested in participating and handing out candy may call or text 717-330-0561 to reserve a spot. "We have plenty of room," said Mowday, noting that registrations will be taken up to the day of the event.

He noted that the first year the church hosted Trunk or Treat, activities were moved indoors because of rain. "The first year we had 300 kids come through, and we had 20 tables set up that year," he said, adding that there is a goal to have additional vehicles featured this year.

WordUP Community Ministries, a community church, is located at 160 Route 41, Gap, in the Dutchland Inc. building. The Sunday service is held in person at 10:45 a.m. and a livestream can also be found by searching for @wordup160 on YouTube. The Sunday WordUPcafe, offering coffee and snacks, precedes the service at 10 a.m.
