Author talk and book signing set

Garden Spot Village, 443 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland, will host an author talk and book signing with resident Leona Baker about her new book, "How They Learned Their ABC's," on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 7 p.m. at the chapel.

Baker's nonfiction book focuses on the educational history of Salisbury Township in what is now the Pequea Valley School District. In 1834, a state law was enacted that required each municipality or township to ensure the education of its children. Despite the state law, by 1844, Salisbury Township still did not have schools available to each child in the district. Over the next 22 years, 19 schools had been created across the municipality.

Throughout the book, Baker relays the true stories of the students, the teachers, and the communities they served as she describes the impact of education in Salisbury Township.
