A joyful noise

Community invited to "Kids' Faves Sunday!"

In April of 2021, Steps to Success Inc., a preschool and day care service, moved into the Zion Lutheran Church building at 18 Quarry Road, Leola. The relocation brought the children who attend into regular contact with church staff members, including worship leader Kurt Brown and pastor Karen Larson.

Last summer, when a group of Zion members were brainstorming worship ideas and themes, a member of the group suggested doing something with children. The result is a brand-new event that brings Zion membership and Steps attendees into partnership for a Sunday of music children love.

The first Kids' Faves Sunday! will be held at Zion Lutheran on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m.

"We will pick out the songs, many of which (the children) already know," said Brown, who has been rehearsing with the children. Familiar songs such as "Jesus Loves Me," "This Little Light of Mine," and a Noah's Ark song some people will recognize from attending church camp will be included. Children who are taking part will rehearse one final time at 9 a.m. on Nov. 12.

"The focus of the entire service will be on kids," explained Brown. "Kids will lead the service with their voices." Brown noted that the band will support the singers but that the children will also use a variety of percussion instruments, such as shakers and tambourines, during worship.

A luncheon in the fellowship hall, which will also feature a few children's games, will follow the service.

To organize the event, Brown approached Steps to Success staff members Lori Rowe, early childhood education director, and overall Steps director and founder Michelle Harbaugh to discuss the idea.

"We're excited to partner," commented Rowe.

Harbaugh said that a Sunday of kids' favorite songs is a natural extension of the organization's mission. "Our children (located at) Zion go to chapel with (Pastor) Karen," said Harbaugh. "They love the story (they hear) by Pastor Karen," she said. "That has evolved into a Kids' Faves Sunday!"

Brown is looking forward to seeing parents and grandparents of the children who are participating at the service, but he noted the invitation is not limited to relatives of those children. "Area families are welcome to join in this service," he said.
