LancasterHistory posts exhibit, holiday tours

LancasterHistory will open its newest exhibition, "Thieves and Vagabonds: A History of Law and Justice in Lancaster County," from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, coinciding with LancasterHistory's ExtraGive open house. After Nov. 17, the exhibition will be on display during regular operating hours at LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., on Mondays to Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"Thieves and Vagabonds" offers visitors an immersive journey through Lancaster County's tumultuous history of law and justice from the 18th century to the 20th century. Covering a vast timeline, from the early European settlers' interactions with indigenous peoples to the idealism of the civil rights movements of the 20th century, "Thieves and Vagabonds" shines a light on lawmaking, lawbreaking, and the impact of both on the Lancaster community. The exhibition and future related educational programming aim to promote introspection and community dialogue on the complexities of law and justice.

Visitors can see the exhibition by purchasing a general admission or Yuletide general admission ticket or a museum exhibitions only ticket. LancasterHistory members may visit for free.

LancasterHistory has also announced its annual Yuletide at Wheatland event. From Monday, Nov. 20, to Saturday, Dec. 30, attendees can observe the holiday traditions of the late 1800s through the eyes of President James Buchanan's niece and nephew, Harriet Lane and James Buchanan "Buck" Henry.

The guided, history-infused holiday tours provide an intimate look at Christmas in the years after Buchanan's death in 1868. Attendees will explore how the holiday spirit blossomed during the Second Industrial Revolution, from the advent of electric tree lights to the burgeoning culture of gift-giving and entertainment. Other topics include Christmas meals, carols and parlor games, Christmas tree decorations, and other seasonal celebrations.

Tours will start on the hour on Mondays through Saturdays, with the first tour at 10 a.m. and the last tour at 3 p.m. No tours will be available on Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 24, and Christmas, Monday, Dec. 25.

Each ticket purchase includes a guided tour of Yuletide at Wheatland and access to the self-guided museum exhibitions at LancasterHistory. Advance ticket booking is recommended as tours often sell out. Walk-in ticket availability is not guaranteed.

Discounts on the admission fee are available for youths ages 6 to 13 and LancasterHistory members. Children age 5 and under will be admitted for free with the admission of a paying adult. Family passes are also available. To purchase tickets, visit http://www.lancasterhistory.org or call 717-392-4633.
