Presentation to focus on Susanna Wright

Solanco Historical Society will host a presentation on Saturday, Nov. 18, at the society's archives building, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville. The free program will begin at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Elizabeth Dillon will speak on "Susanna Wright: Her Life, Writings and Influence." Susanna Wright was born in England in 1697. In 1714, she and her family left England and settled in Chester, Pa. Wright was a devout Quaker, interested in nature, science, and people. She purchased property along the Susquehanna River in 1726 and helped to establish an important ferry crossing that was run by her two brothers. Her house, Wright's Ferry Mansion, was built in 1738 and still stands. Wright wrote poetry, was a leader in her community, and was highly respected by many of the intelligentsia of Colonial America.

Dillon is the assistant curator, tour guide, and head of education and public events at Wright's Ferry Mansion in Columbia. She graduated cum laude from Duquesne University with a degree in history and art history, and she earned a master's degree from Penn State University in American studies. She worked under the tutelage of Lenwood Sloan for Pennsylvania Civil War 150. Dillon was hired by Meg Schaeffer, the curator of Wright's Ferry Mansion, who wrote the definitive text on Susanna Wright. Dillon then worked with Richard von Hess in building the collection at Wright's Ferry Mansion, where she has now been employed for five years.
