Luminaria walk planned

A Christmas luminaria walk will be held in Akron's Roland Park on Lion Lane on Saturday, Dec. 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. Walks of various distances will be available, such as one-quarter mile and one-half mile.

At any time during the event, participants may walk through the pine forested path illuminated by 600 electric tea lights, while small ensembles play music along the way. After walking among the pines, people will be directed to stroll to Pavilion 1, where hot cocoa, cookies and caroling will await. Local folk vocalists the Harmony Singers, will sing Christmas carols, and song sheets will be available for any who wish to join in.

Tom Burnett had the idea for the event and asked the Pilgrims Mennonite Church leadership team for its approval of the activity. People from the church were enthusiastic with the idea and they soon recruited volunteers ages 14 to 75.

Some other local churches are helping Pilgrims Mennonite by volunteering in various ways. Burnett said that after this first program, he hopes that even more churches will become involved in the future.

People are asked to park in the lot by Pavilion 1, near the playground. There, volunteers will direct individuals to the walking routes. Attendees are encouraged to bring flashlights.

In the case of rain, the event will be held on Saturday, Dec. 16. For more information, go to http://www.tinyurl.com/luminary-walk or call 717 859-2986.
