Parkesburg residents with festive and unique holiday decorations at their homes are invited to take part in the Parkesburg Lions Club holiday lighting contest.

A panel of judges will drive around during the evening of Friday, Dec. 15, for judging. Homeowners should be sure to have their full decorations on display by 5 p.m.

"We have cash prizes to hand out for first, second and third place," said Lions Club president Robin McKenna, noting that the contest is open to those with a Parkesburg mailing address.

Those who would like to participate should send a message to McKenna at the club's Facebook page, "Parkesburg Lions Club - New and Improved."

Additionally, the Lions Club has planned two efforts to support members of the armed forces this holiday season. "One is sending snacks and treats to soldiers serving at the United States and Mexico border," explained McKenna. "Another is providing holiday meal support for local reservists and their families."

Donations may be dropped off at the Parkesburg Borough Office, 315 W. First Ave., Parkesburg. Snack items that are needed include gum, trail mix, beef jerky and ramen noodles. Items needed for the Christmas dinner are canned vegetables, boxed stuffing and instant mashed potatoes. People may also donate gift cards to local grocery stores.

McKenna pointed out that people may donate a complete meal for a family or gift individual items. The deadline for donations is Sunday, Dec. 10.

The Parkesburg Lions Club is always looking for new members. The club meets at the Parkesburg Baptist Church, 103 West St., Parkesburg, on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 6:30 p.m. Prospective members are invited to attend a club meeting. "We need people with new ideas, energy and enthusiasm with a passion for helping our community," McKenna said.
