Christmas concert, "Longest Night" event planned

Derry Presbyterian Church, 248 E. Derry Road, Hershey, will host Christmas concerts at 2 and 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10, in the sanctuary. The 2 p.m. concert will also be livestreamed at http://www.derrypres.org and http://www.YouTube.com/derrypres.

The concert has the theme "Gaudete!" - meaning "Rejoice!" - and the program will feature the Sanctuary Choir, the Derry Ringers, a harp and an orchestra. Under the direction of Dan Dorty, director of music and organist at Derry Church, the musicians will present selections such as "Angels' Carol," "In the Bleak Midwinter" and "Carol of the Bells." The audience will be invited to sing along on "Angels We Have Heard on High," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" and other carols. Featured soloists will include Nina Cline and Christyan Seay, and Susan Shuey will also conduct.

The concert is part of the church's Arts Alive Cultural Series. A freewill offering will be received. Handicapped-accessible parking and an elevator are available.

Derry Church will also offer a "Longest Night" worship service at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 19, in the chapel. Held on one of the longest, darkest nights of the year, the reflective service is intended to give people an opportunity to remember and to acknowledge sadness and grief and to be reminded that they are not alone. The service will include Communion.
