GEARS posts programs

GEARS will hold the 2024 Elizabethtown area facility scheduling meeting on Thursday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. This is a mandatory meeting for leagues, associations and groups interested in utilizing Elizabethtown Borough, West Donegal Township, Mount Joy Township or Elizabethtown Area School District athletic fields and facilities. Organizations should have a representative attend to review regulations and facility stipulations and to discuss facility requests. Attendees should bring specific dates, times and field requests to the meeting for consideration. For request forms or additional information, call the aforementioned number or email KarenEberly@GetintoGEARS.org. There is no fee to attend the meeting.

Iddy Biddy Indoor Tennis Lessons will be offered for children ages 3 to 6 at the GEARS Community Center. GEARS will hold Session I on Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 8 to 17; Session II on Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 5 to 14; and Session III on Mondays and Wednesdays, March 4 to 13. Time slots will be 9:30 to 10 a.m. (A) and 10 to 10:30 a.m. (B). Participants will learn agility, balance and coordination using the larger red balls and smaller nets and courts.

Making Budgets Work, presented by M&T Bank, will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 24, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the GEARS Community Center for people age 18 and up. Topics will be identifying personal obstacles to budgeting; creating a structure to track and analyze spending; listing short-term, medium-term and long-term goals; the importance of reducing debt and building emergency savings; and applying strategies to manage day-to-day spending. The class is free, but preregistration is required.

Medicare Madness, for anyone who is about to turn 65, will be held on Thursday, Jan. 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown. Topics will be the basics of Medicare, including how and when to sign up for Medicare; what is covered by the different parts of Medicare (A, B, C and D); the difference between a Medicare Supplemental (Medigap) and a Medicare Advantage plan; and how to find a plan that best fits one's needs. Bingo will be played at the conclusion of the class.

A Social Security Workshop will be presented on Wednesday, Jan. 17, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Senior Center. Topics will include how to understand one's Social Security benefit choices, when to start one's benefits, how to factor in Medicare, how to reduce or eliminate taxation of Social Security and how to optimize one's retirement benefit and create an income base. The class will be taught by Len Bodnar from Bodnar Financial Group.

Game Changer Canine Training will use games and exercises to teach concepts and skills to help dogs achieve calmness, optimism, impulse control, disengagement from distractions and more. Classes will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays, Jan. 29 to March 25, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St., Elizabethtown. There will be no class on March 4. The class is open to individuals age 16 and older.

Pound: Plugged and Unplugged, for people age 14 and up, will be held on Tuesdays, Jan. 9 to March 5, from 6 to 6:45 p.m. at the Fighting Dragons, 101 Cherry St., Elizabethtown. Each session will consist of 30 minutes of Pound followed by 15 minutes of Pound Unplugged, a calmer version of Pound that includes rhythmic breathing and meditation. During Pound, participants will use Ripstix, lightly weighted drumsticks engineered for exercise. The last class of each month will be a glow-in-the-dark session. Attendees should bring a water bottle and towel.

Tai Chi will be offered for people age 18 and up on Tuesdays, Jan. 9 to March 12, at the Masonic Village Carpenter Chapel, 1244 Bainbridge Road, Elizabethtown. An introductory class will be held from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. followed by an advanced class from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. The classes will focus on a 10-step tai chi form introducing students to the basic postures of tai chi.

Chair Yoga will be offered from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays, Jan. 11 to March 7, at the Fighting Dragons. Using the support of a chair, participants will perform the movements in a seated or standing position. The class is for people age 14 and up.

People age 14 and up may attend Cycle Strong on Saturdays, Jan. 6 to March 9, from 8 to 8:45 a.m. at the Community Place on Washington, 105 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown. Attendees should bring water and a towel, as well as two small hand weights if they would like to add upper-body strength work.

Gym Class Heroes, for children ages 4 to 6, will take place on Tuesdays, Jan. 9 to 30, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the gym at the GEARS Community Center. Children will be introduced to sports such as gymnastics, soccer and basketball, and classic gym class games, including parachute activities.
