Urig takes over Solanco girls' hoops program
The basketball season is officially underway, and the Solanco girls' program is under new guidance. Brian Urig, who was the head coach for the Oxford girls from 2002 to 2012 and 2016 to 2018, has replaced the late Chad McDowell, who guided Solanco the last nine seasons. Urig was also the boys' head coach for both Kennett (from 2014 to 2017) and Avon Grove (from 1996 to 1999).
"We have a young team with several players getting their first varsity minutes," stated Urig. "We will focus on good defense to control tempo. Offense comes in streaks, but a solid defensive effort can be counted on."
Solanco won the L-L League Section 3 championships in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons under McDowell but has gotten off to a slow start this year. The girls, as of Dec. 27, 2023, are 0-5.
Urig, who lives in Little Britain Township with his family, is a chemistry teacher at Oxford.
