Pick up a purse at bingo

Come out for an afternoon of fun, and you could win a prize while supporting people and organizations in the Manheim community.

The Women's Club of Manheim will hold a designer purse bingo on Saturday, Feb. 3, at the Farm Show Exhibition Center, 502 Adele Ave. Doors will open at noon, and bingo will begin at 1 p.m.

A ticket will provide three cards for 20 games of regular bingo. Four specialty bingo games will be available for purchase at the door.

"All of the prizes for bingo are designer bags - Coach, Kate Spade and Michael Kors purses," said Shayna Sharp, bingo chair. Additionally, numerous local businesses and individuals, including Buchmoyer Electric, Witman Auctioneers, Edge Fiber & Wireless Development, New Street Laundry, Manheim Auto Auction and Laserdome, have donated items for giveaways.

"Last year, we had 54 (giveaway) items," Sharp recalled. Items range from gift baskets to gift cards.

Food will also be available for purchase during bingo, and all proceeds from the event will be used by the Women's Club to support projects in Manheim.

"One hundred percent of everything we're raising goes back into the Manheim community," Sharp shared, adding that the bingo is the club's biggest fundraiser. "Last year, we raised over $12,000."

Proceeds are used to fund scholarships for senior girls at Manheim Central High School. "Typically, we give at least three, but because of how well bingo has been doing, we've been able to give five," Sharp stated.

The club also uses proceeds to fund community grants. "Last year, we were able to award almost $10,000 in grants," Sharp commented. Recipients included Manheim Central Post Prom, the Home on Ferdinand and Mt. Hope Nazarene Retirement Community, where funds were used to install wheelchair-accessible garden beds and materials for residents.

Recently, the club provided Christmas gifts and grocery gift cards to 29 children from eight families in the Manheim community.

Sharp encourages everyone to come out for the bingo, noting that the event usually sells out. "It's just a fun afternoon," she said. "Everyone always has a good time."

Students from the Interact Club at Manheim Central High School help to set up and clean up the event, and some are on hand to volunteer during the bingo as well.

"We would not be able to have bingo if not for the amazing businesses and community members who sponsor purchasing purses, who give food and (giveaway) items or who help out at the bingo," Sharp said. "I'm kind of in awe of just how much support we get from the community for this event."
