Hiking Club slates activities

A 3.5-mile loop hike near Lake Redman and featuring the nature preserve area will take place on Sunday, Jan. 14, at 1:30 p.m. The well-marked trail includes small hills as well as road and muddy crossings. Hiking boots are needed, and poles are optional. Hikers should meet at the parking lot at the corner of Sparton and Hess Farm roads, York. This activity will be canceled in the case of rain or snow. A covered dish dinner and program will be held on Friday, Jan. 26, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the York Township Park Building, 25 Oak St., York. Attendees should bring their own place settings. Todd Trimmer will talk about his experience walking 500 miles on the Camino de Santiago in 2023. The Camino de Santiago - also known as the Way of St. James - is an iconic pilgrimage, steeped in medieval charm and ending in the northwest corner of Spain at the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Since 1993, this trek has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

An out-and-back hike of approximately 10 miles will take place on Sunday, Jan. 21. Participants should meet at 8 a.m. at the north parking lot (the second lot in the park) along River Farm Road in Susquehanna Riverlands State Park off Codorus Furnace Road. Following the Mason-Dixon Trail, hikers may see a variety of historical sites, such as Codorus Furnace, a pre-Revolutionary War iron-smelting furnace; Codorus Creek; Conrail Stone Arch Bridge, one of the longest stone arch spans in the U.S.; a river channel called Black Gut; a railroad underpass in Saginaw, and Brunner Island Steam Generating Plant. The activity will also feature a visit to a rock outcropping. Attendees should dress for the weather, including wearing hiking boots, and bring a lunch, snacks and water. On Sunday, Jan. 28, individuals may hike 3 to 5 miles on the Northern Rail Trail along the Codorus Creek. Sights will include an eagle's nest, the old tower from Neiman's Sand Banks and a feed mill across the creek. Attendees should meet at 1 p.m. at the corner of Arsenal and Loucks Mill roads at the parking lot for the Northern Rail Trail.
