Donegal to induct new members into Hall of Fame

The Donegal School District will induct a new class of athletes and a coach into its Hall of Fame on Friday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Donegal High School, 1025 Koser Road, Mount Joy. The induction ceremony is free and open to the public.

The 2024 class will include Brian Ney, Class of 1979. Ney was a three-sport athlete at Donegal competing in football, basketball and baseball and earning nine varsity letters in his career. Ney was the quarterback of the undefeated football team in 1978 - the only undefeated football team in school history - going 11-0. He had a 20-2 record as starting quarterback and was the Lancaster Intelligencer Journal Player of the Year MVP for Section 3 in 1978. He was a two-year starting point guard in basketball and a two-time All-Star outfielder on the baseball team.

Also on the induction list is Jessica Shellenberger. In 15 seasons as the head field hockey coach at Donegal, Shellenberger led the Indians to a record of 308-56-9. Along the way, the Indians collected 10 Section Championships, three Lancaster-Lebanon League Championships, six District 3 titles and the 2016 and 2018 PIAA State Championships. Shellenberger was named Coach of the Year by various outlets eight times, including being named the 2019 USFHA's People's Choice National Coach of the Year in 2019. She sent 25 players to Division I programs, including nine All-Americans. Shellenberger is currently a member of both the Warwick High School Hall of Fame (2014) and the Susquehanna Valley Sports Hall of Fame (2017).

Donegal's field hockey state championship teams of 2016 and 2018 will be inducted as well. The 2016 team was 29-0, and the 2018 team finished 28-1. Both were coached by Shellenberger.
