Seminar to explore macular degeneration

VisionCorps will offer an online seminar on macular degeneration from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Monday, Feb. 5, as part of its speaker series. The event is free of charge.

In connection with Age-Related Macular Degeneration Awareness Month, February, Dr. Dina Y. Gewaily from Lancaster Retina Specialists will present information about treatments for dry and wet macular degeneration and answer questions. Macular degeneration is a retinal disease that affects many seniors. It can cause damage to central vision and could result in permanently impaired vision.

Gewaily is an experienced retinal surgeon who previously practiced in Philadelphia. She is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania, where she was chosen as the first female surgical retina fellow. She was a member of the surgical retina team that developed the first FDA-approved gene therapy in the U.S. for an inherited disease.
